About Taichung

Taichung is a city located in western Taiwan, with a population of just over 2.6 million people, making it the third largest city on the island after Taipei City and Kaohsiung. The city lies just west of the Central Mountain Range.

Taiwanese aborigines populated the plains that make up modern Taichung City. Taichung was founded in 1705 as a part of Changhua County with the name of Dadun. The Japanese have chosen Taichung to make it the first modern area of Taiwan. To reach this goal the Japanese administration has invested a lot in roads, dams and levees. One of the main projects was the Taichung Park, which is still one of the most popular places in city for people to relax.

Political Taichung is far more balanced, with the urban city center area leaning Blue and the suburban and rural areas leaning Green. This is in contrast to cities like Taipei and Tainan, which have a much more political-skewed city council. As a result of the relative moderate stand of the city residents, political upheaval and violence are far more rare in Taichung than in other large cities of the country.

The heart of the Taichung economy is formed by small businesses. However Taichung is also an important center for a number of key industries, so is the city a major manufacturer of bicycles and sporting goods. For instance Giant, also a well known bicycle brand in the Netherlands, is established in Taichung.

Climate
Taichung has a subtropical climate, bordering on a tropical climate. Taichung climate is milder than the climate of other major Taiwanese cities. Average temperatures range from 16.6 C in January to 28.6 C in July, with an annual mean of 23.3 C.
