About Tianjin

Tianjin is a metropolis in northern China. It is one of the five national central cities of the PRC and is governed as one of the four direct-controlled municipalities, making it under direct administration of the central government. Tianjin borders the Beijing Municipality and is bounded by the Bohai Gulf of the Yellow Sea to the east. The city is the fourth largest in China, after Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. It is a dual-core city, with its main urban area located along the Hai river, which connects to the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers, and Binhai, a new urban core located east of the old city. 285 Fortune 500 companies have set up a base in Binhai. Since the mid-19th century, Tianjin has been a major seaport and gateway to the nation’s capital. Today, it is transforming into a hub for international shipping and logistics, modern manufacturing and R&D. Major industries are textiles, car manufacturing, mechanical industries and petrochemical industries. Moreover, Tianjin is famous for its stand up comedy and several renowned comedians. Tianjin cuisine places a heavy focus on seafood due to its proximity to the sea. Since 2008, Tianjin has held the annual meeting of the New Champions of the World Economic Forum (also called ‘Summer Davos’).

Climate
Tianjin features a four season, monsoon-influenced climate that is very typical for East Asia. It includes cold, windy and very dry winters (reflecting the influence of the vast Siberian anticyclone) and hot and humid summers (due to the monsoons). Spring is dry and windy, occasionally with sandstorms blowing in from the Gobi Desert. Average temperatures range from -3.5 C in January to 26.6 C in July, with an annual mean of 12.6C.
